Obama's Unthinkable Position On Babies Who Survive Abortions

I had heard rumblings about this, but hadn't read the facts until now.

Barack Obama is actually to the left of NARAL (National Abortion Rights Alliance) on an issue that should bother even the most hardened liberals.

While in the Illinois Senate Obama voted against and then killed a vote on a bill that would have made it a crime to leave a live baby to die OUTSIDE of the womb after being delivered.

The Induced Infant Liability Act was introduced to protect babies that survived late-term abortions and were born alive. Some doctors were actually just leaving them on the table to die over time.

Jill Stanek, a registered delivery-ward nurse who was the prime mover behind the legislation after she witnessed aborted babies' being born alive and left to die, testified twice before Obama in support of the Induced Infant Liability Act bills. She also testified before the U.S. Congress in support of the Born Alive Infant Protection Act.

Stanek told me her testimony "did not faze" Obama.

In the second hearing, Stanek said, "I brought pictures in and presented them to the committee of very premature babies from my neonatal resuscitation book from the American Pediatric Association, trying to show them unwanted babies were being cast aside. Babies the same age were being treated if they were wanted!"

"And those pictures didn't faze him [Obama] at all," she said.

If that doesn't animate some conservatives on the fence about being able to support a very moderate McCain then I don't know what will.

Considering the fact that the bill was uncontitutional and would have made abortion illegal, I am guessing he is not the baby killer you are trying so desperately to make him out to be. Try fact checking your 'rumblings' before typing.

Obama noted:

... I just want to suggest... that this is probably not going to survive constitutional scrutiny.

Number one, whenever we define a previable fetus as a person that is protected by the equal protection clause or the other elements in the Constitution, what we're really saying is, in fact, that they are persons that are entitled to the kinds of protections that would be provided to a - child, a nine-month-old - child that was delivered to term. That determination then, essentially, if it was accepted by a court, would forbid abortions to take place.

I mean, it - it would essentially bar abortions, because the equal protection clause does not allow somebody to kill a child, and if this is a child, then this would be an antiabortion statute. For that purpose, I think it would probably be found unconstitutional. [Barack Obama - IL Senate floor on March 30, 2001]

FYI - Jill Stanek is a Pro-Lifer so her comments should be taken with a shaker of salt.

By your logic (or at least Obama's logic that you quote) prematurely born babies would also not be considered "persons" since they were not 9 months old and could not survive without special care.

Technology has ensured that the stage at which babies are considered "viable" gets younger almost every day. Stem-cell scientists and others carrying out cloning of animals have obviously already figured out how to preserve life without it's natural host.

If that argument isn't already defeated it probably will be in the next few years.

The other glaring problem here with Obama's stance is that it was not shared by NARAL.

Are you suggesting to me that this bill would have barred ALL abortions yet the National Abortion Rights Alliance had nothing to say about it????

Call me crazy, but this is an organization that spends tens of millions of dollars every year and millions of hours in the defense of abortion. If this in fact would have done what you said it would I reckon they would have gone crazy.

I'm going to have to trust the massive legal team of NARAL over an anonymous commentator on a blog for this one.

As for Jill Stanek, perhaps you may want to take her testimony with a grain of salt due to her pro-life (I'll trust you) stance.

But on the other hand shouldn't you also give the pro-life position another look given that someone in her profession who knows what she's talking about better than you or I holds it and believes in it strongly enough to take it to the state legislature?
